At The Stone Mill, we are very proud
of our location not only because of its beauty but
also because of its rich history. In 1792, Jacob
Keller built the first paper mill in western
Pennsylvania on land he had received from the Penn
family in the mid 1700s. He selected a location
between the protection of a rugged natural rock
wall and the flowing water of what is today the
Codorus Creek. Over the next two centuries, the
location would also serve as an orphanage, a scrap
metal salvage yard and legendarily an important
stop on the Underground Railroad.
Although portions of the
original mill have been torn down from the left
side of the building, the remaining portion has
been lovingly restored and now serves as a perfect
host for the current gift shop which is owned and
operated by Jeff and Shannon Geiman and Ray and Deb
Gass. The stone and lime-mortared walls, aged wood
beams and worn brick floors perfectly embrace and
complement our unique inventory of items.
